On 15 July 1652, Witte de With had brought his squadron of 8 ships to the fleet. He reported to Tromp that those 8 ships had foul bottoms and were short of crew. Tromp wrote that the strength on 16 July was now 94 warships and 10 fireships. Tromp considered the fireships to be very fragile and likely to suffer storm damage. This is based on the account in Vol.I of
The First Dutch War.
